One segment is 160 characters
A plain text up to 160 characters is one segment, billed once.
Longer texts split
Past 160 characters the text splits into parts of 153 characters each (a few characters go on stitching them back together). A 300-character text is two segments.
Emoji and some symbols change the rule
One emoji, a curly quote or certain symbols switch the whole text to a different character set. Then it's 70 characters per segment, or 67 per part when it splits. The same message can suddenly cost two or three times as much.
Check before you send
Paste your message into the SMS cost calculator. It shows the segments and the cost in AUD before you hit send.
Keep it lean
Use straight quotes, skip emoji in bulk sends, and put links at the end.
Your texts stay in one segment, and your wallet lasts longer.
